The Haunted Lawfirm

The Ethics of Magic

After going through an emotionally difficult divorce, Mitch McCaffrey believes he finally has his life straightened out. He loves his job teaching English at Carolina Highlands Community College. He is hoping to marry the lovely Diana Corcoran Winstead.

But his life falls apart when a student accuses him of sexual and racial harassment. He knows the accusation is bogus, but Monica Gilbert, the college Compliance Officer, pursues it with savage determination. She has more than philosophical differences with Mitch. She has personal axes to grind with both Mitch and Diana. She is determined to take Mitch’s job.

Mitch finds a good lawyer, Kathryn Turner. But Kathryn warns that the odds are against him, and the legal costs could wipe out his savings.

Mitch may have another option. He is a Magic User. But his training is incomplete. And his deceased mentor cautioned him about the dangers of using magic for personal gain. It could backfire.

And there’s something else. Monica is a witch. She has no such scruples.

But Mitch won’t give up, and prepares for a cat and mouse game, both legal and magical.

The Pathways of Magic

Mitch McCaffrey and Diana Corcoran Winstead are about to be married when Mitch receives a surprise visit from Alyssa McCormick, a mysterious beauty who is being pursued by…a werewolf. After a harrowing encounter with the warg, Alyssa identifies herself as the grand-niece of Mitch’s late mentor, Dr. James McCormick, and asks for Mitch’s help. She says the werewolf was sent by the CIA, whose agents are convinced she possesses a spying spell. She says she does not, but believes the spell is in the books Dr. McCormick bequeathed Mitch. To make it worse, she says the FBI wants the same spell, and she thinks the Bureau will trump up criminal charges against her to get it.

Alyssa wants to borrow Mitch’s grimoires. And she wants him and Diana to find a lawyer for her. Mitch and Diana are reluctantly drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse, both magical and legal. But they have little choice, since the government now knows about them, and they are at risk, too. Mitch and Diana turn once again to Kathryn Turner, who brings in a new associate, Ben Callahan, to assist her and Marc Washington fend off criminal charges, while Mitch, Diana and Alyssa walk the pathways of magic to face down paranormal threats. One of these is their old nemesis, Monica Gilbert, who resurfaces as a consultant for the FBI. But where will the pathways take them? To prison? Or worse?

A Snowstorm of Magic

There are two days until Christmas. Bob Ashworth, a young associate attorney at the Haunted Law firm, and his wife Samantha are on their way to spend the holiday with Big Jim Tompkins, one of the firm’s major clients, at the Tompkins mansion deep in the North Carolina mountains. In the meantime, Mitch and Diana McCaffrey and Diana’s sons are preparing to celebrate Christmas with their friends Ben Callahan and Alyssa McCormick, a couple of mountain ridges over from the Tompkins place. The most severe snowstorm in thirty years is moving in. The quiet holiday takes an unexpected turn when an apparent alien spacecraft creeps in through the blizzard and lands close to the Tompkins mansion. With air travel of any sort completely shut down by the storm, Mitch, Diana and Alyssa are asked by their Defense Intelligence Agency handler to investigate, and offered the assistance of their old nemesis, Monica Gilbert, who is vacationing nearby at a mountain resort. The alien threat turns out to be real, and endangers everyone at the Tompkins home. Mitch, Alyssa, and Diana will learn whether their Talents are a match for alien tech, and whether Monica is really an ally. And this time, Ben’s legal skills are of no help.

A Cascade of Magic

This collection contains short stories that provide the history and the regional and cultural background of Melton, Norville, Jennings & Johnson – the Haunted Law Firm. It concludes with a long novella, “Breach of Promise”, that continues the saga of characters introduced in the first three novels, including Mitch and Diana McCaffrey, Alyssa McCormick, Ben Callahan, and Rob and Samantha Ashworth, as Rob undertakes the prosecution of an action for “breach of promise” to marry on behalf of a young woman, Anna Louise Penley, who turns out to be a young witch who is under the thumb of the McCaffreys’ old nemesis, Monica Gilbert. The novella introduces a new character, Aleksandra Tatarkiewicz, a beginning paralegal with the firm, who has abilities and a history that are more than at first meet the eye. Characters old and new learn that keeping promises can be harder than it looks.

The Heredity of Magic

If a Neanderthal baby boy were to be brought up from infancy in a modern American home, how would he fare? What if he has abilities that make him exceptional? Would he fit in? Be ridiculed? Celebrated? Become the victim of discrimination? If he is an exceptional athlete, will he be envied? Disdained? Some possible answers to these questions are explored in this novel. Doug Martin is the clone of a 50,000 year-old man born of Neanderthal and modern human parents, reared as the only child of Darren and Lara Martin. Now 18 years old, he is a standout high school athlete, who has, in addition to athletic talent, paranormal abilities unknown to most and that even he does not understand. But those who know of his talents include shadowy government agents who would like to exploit them. When his genetic heritage is exposed, these agents, desiring to harness his powers to their ends, work through the Firm’s enemy Monica Gilbert to influence the state athletic association to remove Doug’s athletic eligibility. Doug and his family seek legal representation from the Haunted Law Firm, where young partners Marc Washington and Rob Ashworth are determined to defend him. He has the support of his lawyers, his family, and his girlfriend, Eva. Will that be enough, or will a little magic be required?
